Colourful and contemporary kitchen island. Kitchen island with blue bench top and red chairs. More suited to home with an eclectic or ’bachelor pad’ vibe, this kitchen isn’t afraid of colour. Experiment with materials and lighting if you want a similar effect in your home, and remember that sometimes less is more, that’s why this sleek blue bench top and red plastic chairs work so well in a stark white kitchen.
Geometric rules. The hexagonal tiles in this splashback might appear too busy in an otherwise visually crowded space. Here it works to create interest and offset the expanse of white cabinetry overhead. Brushed metal linear handles in the lower cabinets link back to the tiles, as well as the VJ panelling elsewhere in the surrounding kitchen space.

Do’s and don’ts of kitchen island design. When it comes to getting the kitchen layout and the kitchen island design right, it pays to pick the brains of the professionals. The builders at Porter Davis have experience in home layouts and they have a list of five do’s and don’ts when it comes to kitchen island bench design.
Marble dream. This is a dramatic benchtop with heavy veining in the marble and a very thick depth which gives it added gravitas, as does the continuation of marble up the splashback and placement of the island directly in front of the bank of cabinetry. Equally striking are the smooth black pendant lights above – they provide another resting place for the eyes away from the marble and the darker tones in the appliances therefore become part of the design, rather than an interruption.
Kitchen bench clutter is enough to drive anyone around the bend. There are keys, pens, pencils, wallets – not to mention the endless stream of bits and bobs that husbands empty from their pockets and kids leave behind. Well one Queensland mum-of-seven has taken to the awesome Kmart Mums Australia Facebook group to reveal her simple hack to rid your kitchen bench of mess once and for all!
