Yet another easy-to-build DIY bench is available at MyOutdoorPlans. It calls for several 2x4s of various lengths for the legs, trim, and seat. Like the image shows, the bench seat rests on two blocks, which sets it 16 off the ground. The whole bench is 58 long. All the details and pictures necessary to build this bench are included in the plan.
The fact is benches have a lot to offer and they can often be the better choice, especially in the kitchen. Choose to have a kitchen table with bench seating if you want unobstructed views. Sometimes it’s best to look at what benches don’t have to realize what they can offer. With a new year just around the corner, you are probably reflecting on all the accomplishments you achieved in 2014 and jotting down some aspirational resolutions for a brand new start.

The bench is 5’ long and stands just over 1.5’ off the ground. It requires a single 8’ long 2×12, one 8’ long 2×4, and three 1/2 deck screws. A PDF is available at the bottom of the DIY Garden Plans page that includes a few short instructions. There aren’t many steps to this plan, but that’s actually a good sign because it means the bench is pretty simple to put together.
The Design Confidential is one of the best free sources for woodworking plans because the instructions are very thorough and are accompanied with illustrations showing the exact piece of the bench that the particular step is describing. Another free bench plan can be had at DIY Garden Plans. As you can see in the image, this bench isn’t made up of anything too complex, so it should be a perfect project for a beginner.
If there is one thing in the world that nearly everyone can agree on, it’s a breakfast nook. We can all agree that they are rather a luxury in a home, mostly because if you have a breakfast nook, you likely have a formal dining room as well. We can also agree that breakfast nooks are cozy spaces for everything from morning coffee to afternoon homework sessions. All you need to achieve this space in your home is a table, a bench and a space in your kitchen to put them. The size of your table usually depends on the size of your kitchen but benches don’t have to be the complicated built ins you’ll find in many breakfast nooks.
