Black. Black is still very much trending in kitchen island design. It looks fabulous on its own but equally compliments many colours and surfaces. It does mark easily, so make sure you choose the right finish.Colour. For those who aren’t scared of colour, the strong, moody and muted colours are definitely trending. Greys and greens are still strong but are easy on the eye, and these colours can set the tone for your home.
Contemporary details. Timber tones in the oversized sliding glass doors carry the eye across the dining table and chairs. Concrete pendant lighting and slimline mosaic tiled splashback are simply elegant. The rug placed under the dining table absorbs sound, softens the space and demarcates the dining zone. Timber with copper details. Striking black cabinetry underneath the benchtop provides a sturdy base and anchors the activity beneath soaring ceilings. Copper details in the lighting and outside in the large plant pot bring the outside in and bridge the two spaces, connecting timber, metal and the stone of the benchtops.

Less is more. In terms of style, minimalism is still king but will blend itself with the existing style of the house. I anticipate crossovers; for example in an industrial style home or a mid-century home with different design elements and choices. Clients want to conceal their clutter but showcase their style and character through really interesting and considered finishes, textures, colour, lighting, shelving space and decorative elements.
Kitchen bench clutter is enough to drive anyone around the bend. There are keys, pens, pencils, wallets – not to mention the endless stream of bits and bobs that husbands empty from their pockets and kids leave behind. Well one Queensland mum-of-seven has taken to the awesome Kmart Mums Australia Facebook group to reveal her simple hack to rid your kitchen bench of mess once and for all!
Tracey says she spent ages searching stores for a ready-made storage solution to tidy up her kitchen clutter when she ‘gave up’ and came up with this genius idea using two Kmart products that ANYONE can do. One $15 shelf, 4 of the $2 small and narrow bamboo drawer tidies and I finally have a way to hide all the stuff my husband and kids need to leave on our kitchen bench, Tracey wrote.
